April 25, 2024 - Fly to Cape May with Bones

Today I was flying to Bennett Field, near Salisbury, to pickup my old shipmate "Bones", and together we would fly over to Cape May for breakfast.

Here I'm looking down at Bennett Field which has two perpendicular grass runways.  This was nice, allowing me to land into the wind.

On the deck at Bennett.  It's a privately-owned, public use airport.  The grass runways are in excellent condition.

I don't fly in here too often but it seems to me they have spruced up the place a little.  This office, at the end of a hangar row is new.  The inside is still under construction but it does have an operational restroom, which was nice.

Shortly thereafter, we were parked in front of the Flight Deck Diner at Cape May Airport.  The wind was blowing surprisingly hard when we landed, but Cape May has perpendicular runways so again, I was able to land into the wind.  The Cirrus pictured here landed right after us.  By chance, the two pilots sat near us in the diner.  It turns out one of them was a P-3 pilot and did a 20 year career like me.  Small world.  He and the other pilot -- an ex-Marine helicopter pilot I believe -- work for a big defense industry company and get to fly the Cirrus occasionally, for work.  Now that's what is known as a good deal!

Bones and the Claw!

Departing Cape May, we flew across Delaware Bay and then down the Delaware-Maryland ocean coast.

Somewhere down Assateaque Island we turned west and headed back towards Salisbury.  Bone's house is in this picture, but you'll have to guess which one it is.

It was great getting together with Bones and reliving the old times.
